My Dreadlocks: A History

2012 - Shmokin' Hot Pink Knots...

I have had many comments and questions recently about my beloved dreadlocks, so I thought it was about time to dedicate more of my blog space to my crusty coiffure!

People seem to be puzzled by dreads for some reason and there seem to be a million ridiculous myths surrounding knotty locks that always make me roll my eyes in disbelief!
Despite popular opinions, dreadlocks are very clean and you definitely have to wash them regularly, nobody wants to smell like a pissy old tramps dog eh? Perhaps one of the most retarded stories that I have heard about dreads is that you have to smother them in peanut butter to keep their shape ! Come on, do I look like a piece of wholemeal toast?! Oh, and if anyone was wondering if because you have dreads then you are a Rastafarian, then the answer is no. Obviously. Duh.

So I thought I would set the records straight about dreadlocks once and for all. Each week I will be giving you an insight into me' hair, how I keep it looking so dazzlingly beautiful and what products I use to massage through my fashionable scalp! As well as this I will be leaking all of the invaluable tips (that I never got) about keeping a fine head of natty natty dreads. Oh and despite popular belief, being a Bob Marley fan is not a pre-requisite to read on...
Knotty Locks Timeline
1987 - Sensible plaits for first day of school. No sign
of dreadlocks yet...

2001 - Doing my best 'Sideshow Bob' impression
as mini dreads first come into fruition after trip
to Thailand.
2004 - Typical crusty look complete with bleached
tips and'hair snake'! Fucking hippie
2007 - Long and plum coloured -  'oh so bohemian'
2009 - The Butch Undercut is born!
2010 - The dread/fringe hybrid makes it's first appearance
for a summer wedding
2011 - The Locks go bright red (NOT ginger)
2011 - The fringe is erected as
homage to 'Jedward'!

From pathetic little excuses for locks, to human rights protesting hippie chic,  to the pink hued splendour you see today, my dreads have been on a fair old journey in the past 10 years. I hope you have enjoyed the ride?
Which phase do you like best?
What kind of dreadlock themed posts would you like to see next?
Any Dreadlock themed questions at all?

Until then, Knotty Hugs and Crusty Kisses,

I like the red and the pink best. Dreadlocks definitely have a lot of mystery surrounding them. It's not the kind of thing you just do for fashion. Or maybe that's just another misconception.

I've had dreads for over 5 years. The are my own hair color of mostly grey/white with some brown. They almost reach my butt.

I also had them at age in 1984 at age 19 in my natural brown color, and in 1990 when I had white (bleached) dreads.

Personally, I don't like when people leave their bangs undreaded, so I like your 2004 & 2007 dreads. Have you considered dreading your bangs now?

I really like the first time you introduced fringe! That plum was so soft and warm looking. Of course, every look was stunning, but that one really stuck out.

Well haven't you just always been a little cutie patootie! I'm a big fan of the dread/fringe hybrid. Personally I think you carry it all off with a bang!

Pretty cool to see the transformation. I gotta say I dig the 2007 look, so natural and beautiful but I also love your current glam too.

Last Summer I was sick of twats criticising my mousy hair, so I got dreadlocks and loved them so much. Those same myths annoyed my so badly too; I got asked "So do you like wanna be Jamaican?" and people made gay comments like "Wow how do you manage never washing your hair?" and "Oh is that the latest fashion then?".
The funny thing is, whilst I had them people were really stand offish about it, but the day I cut them out complete strangers were hugging me and saying they had loved them etc etc etc.
I still have them in a bag behind my waderobe.
They all had names.
Also I used to whipp people who annoyed me with them.

You´re hair is wonderful, very expressive and creative! I´m from Venezuela and my english is not very well, sorry. How old are you? You look like a girl like me, but you´re not so young. Bye! :D I agree with what you say about the myths of dreadlocks.

Very interesting! I like the plum coloured dreads best actually, the colour and the texture are very nice together.

My hair is naturally curly and dark, so I'm considering giving the dreads a pop.
